TODAY IN TITANIC HISTORY: April 11th, 2012.

100 years ago today, on April 11th, 1912, the RMS Titanic arrived at Cork Harbour in Queenstown (now known as Cobh), Ireland. Because of Titanic’s large size, the docks weren’t able to accommodate her properly, so tenders (aka smaller ships) had to be used to transport passengers and cargo. Some who had boarded at Southampton also departed in Ireland. This was Titanic’s last stop before making the journey across the Atlantic Ocean.

One of the passengers to get off the ship in Ireland was Father Francis Browne, a priest with a passion for photography. Whilst on his short trip with the Titanic, Browne took many photos, which safely departed the ship with him in Ireland. After the news hit that the Titanic had sank, Browne’s images became of much interest because of their newly found value of the foundered ship, including the last-known photographs ever taken of Titanic. You can see some of Browne’s other photos by clicking this link.
